Leeches crawl up a wall as heavy rains lashed at Sri Devi Vaishnavi Nagar at Avadi in Chennai on Monday.

As S. Vishwanathan of Thirumullaivoyal sat in his house worrying about his locality getting flooded this monsoon, something broke his chain of thoughts. The flickering light of the candle helped him spot some objects crawling up the wall - leeches.

Apart from the flooding and the garbage that is swept into houses in the suburbs during monsoon, many localities have been complaining about snakes and leeches.

While some of them kill the reptiles, others just have learnt to live with it.

“For many years now we have been affected due to the flooding. This is because the drains have not been completed properly. Despite repeated complaints there has not been any action from authorities,” compains Mr. Vishnawanthan, secretary, Sridevi Vasihnavi Nagar Resident Welfare Association, which comes in the 13{+t}{+h}ward of Avadi Municipality. He says that all water from the Thirumullaivoyal Main Road flows into their locality. “Usually snakes come in during monsoon. This time however we are seeing the leeches. Many of them are even crawling up high walls,” he says.

“When it gets stuck on people, it is very difficult to remove them. We are frightened that it may affect children and the elderly,” he adds. Similar the situation is similar in Sivasakthi Nagar in Annanur. “During monsoon it is a big problem. They are all over the compound,” says V. Ananya, a resident.

Meanwhile in areas like Mudichur snakes have become a cause of concern apart from flooding. For the past few days residents of Royappa Nagar in Mudichur have been living in an island.

“There is no power supply for the past few days. Snakes including vipers and cobra crawl in our verandah,” says P. Patrick. The residents themselves have been killing the reptiles. “It is difficult to see them in the night,” he adds. Firemen said complaints about snakes are common in suburbs. “Usually we get calls from North Chennai and Western Suburbs,” says an official.

The first stethoscope

René Laennec, a French doctor and inventor was born 235 years ago today, and Google has marked his birthday with a Doodle. Dr Laennec's importance to modern medicine was guaranteed by his invention of the very first stethoscope in 1816. Here are five things you (probably) didn't know about him : 1. Dr Laennec's stethoscope bears little semblance to the modern stethoscope. Unlike those used today, Dr Laennec's stethoscope was not a set of ear pieces connected by a plastic tube to a chest piece. His stethoscopes were simple cylinders made from wood and metal. The doctor using it would simply place it directly over the area in question and listen at the other end. 2. His first stethoscope was a rolled up piece of paper Described in his  1819 treatise  on this device, Dr Laennec invented the stethoscope while treating a young woman suffering from symptoms of heart disease. 3. The stethoscope was not his only contribution to medical science I...

Lenovo Vibe K4 Note First Impressions

Lenovo has kicked off 2016 with the new Vibe K4 Note smartphone. Those familiar with Lenovo's Note series might get puzzled with the addition of the Vibe moniker to the name, especially given the success of Lenovo K3 Note last year. Head of Product and Marketing at Lenovo Smartphones in India, Anuj Sharma, clarified that the new K4 Note has been integrated with the Vibe series of smartphones. While we are not sure if this has anything to do with the rumours that Lenovo may discontinue its Vibe range to prevent cannibalisation of Motorola sales, Sharma yet again asserted "Vibe" range is not going anywhere . Lenovo at the Delhi launch event on Tuesday also showed some statistics to show how popular the Lenovo K3 Note really is in the country. The handset was the third most searched phone in 2015, based on Google's release data for India , and the company had sold around 1.2 million units. W...
