In those infomercials you always see when
you're up too late, WEN Hair Care by Chaz Dean hair products promise to
"take the place of your shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner,
detangler, and leave-in conditioner, saving you time and money."
But
now 200 women in 40 states have filed a class-action lawsuit against
WEN and infomercial marketing company Guthy-Renker claiming that the
products caused "significant hair loss to the point of visible bald
spots, hair breakage, scalp irritation, and rash," according to the Daily Beast.

The site reports that court papers namecheck
nurse practitioner Amy Friedman, who lost "one quarter to one third" of
her hair after using the company's Sweet Almond Mint basic kit, and that
"the WEN products at issue contain a caustic ingredient that causes a
chemical reaction and damages hair and follicles." It's not clear which
ingredient is problematic but WEN does list ingredients on their Web site.
The
suit also accuses Guthy-Renker of removing negative online reviews and
blocking posts about hair loss from WEN's Facebook page.
Still, an online search shows bad reviews dating back five years, with one commenter
saying, "my hair began to fall out by the handfuls. I was pulling so
much hair from my drain I thought I was going bald," as well as news of
previous smaller lawsuits
against the company. And BuzzFeed collected a few shocking photos of
women showing hair loss after they say they used WEN products.
