Digital toy maker VTech says customer data stolen in breach     Electronic toymaker VTech Holdings Ltd ( 0303.HK ) said on Friday that it was the victim of a cyber attack that compromised information about customers who access a portal for downloading children's games, books and other educational content. VTech, which sells children's tablets, electronic learning toys and baby monitors, disclosed the attack in a statement on its website that did not say how many records were stolen. The news site Motherboard reported that data belonging to some 4.8 million parents and more than 200,000 children was taken. It said that included names, email addresses, passwords and home addresses of parents; as well as first names, genders and birthdays of children. 10 Endrathukulla

10 Endrathukulla   For long Road trips have been the envy of Hollywood and then Bollywood joined the bandwagon too, and in a similar way Transporter has been one of the finest franchises in Hollywood too. Vijay Milton has somehow put both these concepts in a blender, added some Tamil cinema's stereotyped commercial elements like item songs, a zillion villains, occasional adult jokes, action and all that to give 10E. Vikram making his appearance after the magnificent "I" stands tall with his style is paired with the gorgeous Samantha who might have grabbed her biggest role in Kollywood till date, given equal importance and also present is Pasupathy in a different avatar. Vijay Milton has treated the storyline rather simple and straightforward with the only twists coming in late towards the climax. What happens when a stylish driver capable of doing those fast and furious stunts gets acquainted with a charming lady who has failed 15 times in driving test

UNICEF: AIDS leading cause of death for African teenagers

UNICEF: AIDS leading cause of death African teenagers   While the global push to eradicate HIV may have saved over a million babies, AIDS is now the leading cause of death for African teenagers and the second most common killer for adolescents across the globe, the United Nations' agency for children said on Friday. Despite gains made among adults and babies with HIV, the number of 10-to-19-year-olds dying from AIDS-related diseases has tripled since 2000, UNICEF said, launching the global data at a press conference in South Africa. "We've collectively dropped the ball in the second decade of childhood," said Craig McClure, the chief of UNICEF's HIV and AIDS division.

Aussie media see pink ball appeal

Aussie media see pink ball appeal   Sydney: The first ever pink ball Test in Adelaide was warmly received by Australian commentators, with several likening the day-night match to playing under darkened English skies. The first game of its kind in cricket's 138-year history, the opening day of the Australia v New Zealand clash on Friday drew some 47,441 fans -- the biggest crowd at the Adelaide Test since the famous 1932-33 Bodyline series. "The whole thing looked pretty much like Test cricket," wrote Richard Hinds in The Daily Telegraph after the first day saw New Zealand win the toss and bat, only to be all out for 202. Australia were 54 for 2 at close. "Played with a pink ball. Under lights. At Trent Bridge. "The visibility was different. The beaten batsman might say worse. But the conditions were not completely unfamiliar or particularly unfair." Writing in The Australian newspaper, Peter Lalor said at times Austr

Now, internet at the speed of light

Now,internet at the speed of light            The last time you switched your torch on and off, it was probably a playful mimicry of Morse. Very soon, however, you might be doing it for some serious message transmission — and that could be 100 times faster than average Wi-Fi.    Scientists have finally introduced Li-Fi, a superfast new form of wireless co mmunication for computers, outside of labs. An Estonian start-up, Velmenni, successfully implemented this technology in its offices.  According to reports in the Sydney Morning Herald , Li-Fi, which rapidly transmits data using flickering LED light fields between 400 and 800 terahertz, is nearly 100 times faster than Wi-Fi. The technology employed is known as Visible Light Communication (VLC), and is like an advanced version of Morse-code. Like switching a torch on and off in a pattern to relay a message in Morse, LED lights flick on and off in VLC at such extreme speeds that it can be used to

Megatrends in Marketing

Megatrends in Marketing The chief marketing officer's job is tougher than ever, yet charming like never before. Amidst a swell of opportunities around people and places, there lies the frightful reality of change and challenges. In today's ever-evolving business and consumer landscape, marketers face challenges that their predecessors didn't have to dare. Also, there is myriad information when it comes to megatrends in marketing. However, the 'real' megatrends are a matter of one's own analysis and vision, and of course the reader's own articulation of the content. It is a subject matter of interpretation.  Simplicity: The complex ordeal of practising it           Choices are aplenty to the consumer of today; and delivering a unique positioning in a world of chaos of brands and propositions is quite a challenging task for a marketing professional. There was a time when we saw ambiguous messaging majoring in the interim, but

Dads get baby blues

Dads get baby blues   F athers are nearly as likely to experience anxiety around the arrival of a new baby as mothers, according to research published in the Journal of Affective Disorders . Men, too, are prone to anxiety and depression around the birth of a baby. Results from previous studies vary, but some suggest that over 20% of parents suffer from anxiety or depression . The causes of anxiety and depression around the arrival of a new baby are poorly understood. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say the risk is greater for those who have had difficulty becoming pregnant or problems during pregnancy or birth, for those who have lost a baby through miscarriage or stillbirth, among teenage mothers, in cases of multiple births or if the child has a health problem. However, depression can occur even with a healthy pregnancy and healthy birth. According to the CDC, postnatal depression includes the usual depression symptoms but may f

Functional human liver cells grown in the lab

Functional human liver cells grown in the lab   The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body, serving as the main site of metabolism. Human hepatocytes -- cells that comprise 85% of the liver -- are routinely used by the pharmaceutical industry for study of hepatotoxicity, drug clearance and drug-drug interactions. They also have clinical applications in cell therapy to correct genetic defects, reverse cirrhosis, or support patients with a liver-assist device. Regrettably, while the human liver can rapidly regenerate in vivo, recognized by the ancient Greeks in the myth of Prometheus, this capability to proliferate is rapidly lost when human cells are removed from the body. Thus far, attempts to expand human hepatocytes in the laboratory resulted in immortalized cancer cells with little metabolic function. The scarce supply of human hepatocytes and this inability to expand them without losing function is a major bottleneck for scientific, clinical and

Southampton will snub any bids for Sadio Mane, says Ronald Koeman

The 23-year-old joined the Saints from Red Bull Salzburg last September and netted 10 goals during his first season in England, which included him scoring the fastest ever hat-trick in Premier League history in the 6-1 thrashing of Aston Villa in May. Mane, who has scored six times so far this campaign, is reportedly attracting interest from Chelsea and Manchester United ahead of the January transfer window. However, Koeman is adamant Mane and other key members of his first-team squad will not be sold in the New Year. "Rumours aren't important: we will sell nobody," the Southampton manager said. "You can ask again about Sadio, Man United, Chelsea, but we will sell nobody in January." Southampton's impressive Premier League stabilisation under Mauricio Pochettino only ended with a host of raids on the club's top talent. Koeman has since fought to stem that tide, though France midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin still joined United last summ

New Zealand win toss, choose to bat first in maiden day-night test

New Zealand captain Breden McCullum won the toss and chose to bat first against Austrila in cricket's inaugural day-night test match at Adelaide Oval. Australia, who lead the series 1-0, have already retained the Trans-Tasman trophy following the draw in Perth, but both teams will be eager to etch their names in the record books as the first side to win a test played under floodlights. New Zealand also have a proud record to defend, having not been defeated in seven test series since 2013 under McCullum. Although both teams have played warmups under lights with the specially developed pink ball, the match, the last in the three-match series, is something of a leap into the unknown for the players. Batsmen have reported problems seeing the ball clearly at twilight and the bowlers will hope to exploit that during the later session.

PM invites Sonia, Manmohan for 'chai pe charcha' on GST

Reaching out to main opposition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh for tea on Friday evening during which issues like Goods and Service Tax Bill may come up. Modi on Friday invited the Congress leaders at his Race Course Road residence at 7 PM, sources said. This assumes significance as the government and the Congress are at loggerheads which is stalling the passage of crucial legislations like the Goods and Services Tax Bill. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had on Thursday said that the prime minister is willing to speak to everyone to get the landmark indirect tax law through. Jaitley, who needs Parliament approval for GST Bill in the winter session to roll out the new indirect tax regime as planned from April 1, said he has spoken to “almost all Congress leaders” on the issue. “We have absolutely no hesitation even at the level of prime minister. We have never had in it in the past, we don’t have it (now).

The 10 year old who saved the lives of 850 passengers

On March 15, the Harihara-Chitradurga passenger train was passing through Avaregere village in Davangere district, Karnataka. The locomotive driver saw a young boy running towards the train on the track waving a red cloth vigorously. The driver applied the brakes and stopped the train. The boy, Siddesh Manjunath, 10, may have saved the lives of about 850 passengers on that train. Siddesh told   that after breakfast he decided to go to his father's tea shop. To get there he had to cross the railway track. When he neared the track, he had to wait as there was a train passing by. "I regularly cross the track here and I am familiar with the sound that the train makes on the tracks. I noticed that the train was louder than it normally was." "After it passed I examined the tracks and saw a big gap on one track. I ran to my father's shop which is nearby."
